Episode 300: Is Grammar Elitist?

Does grammar matter?

On one side: the language sticklers, who hold that good grammar is a necessity for communication, and even a matter of upholding standards and courtesy. But there’s another side: that grammar rules are often just made up, designed to reinforce social barriers, and that an insistence on good grammar is a form of elitism and snobbery. Which view is supported by the facts?

Kylie, Ben, and Daniel are watching their words on this episode of Talk the Talk.

Episode 277: All About Accents

Accents are like opinions: everybody’s got one. But how do opinions affect accents?

Listeners want to know: Why do people seem to lose their accent when they sing? And is there any reason why we think some accents sound attractive and others less so?

Daniel, Ben, and Kylie talk it over on this episode of Talk the Talk.

Episode 250: Comma Sutra (featuring Louisa Fitzhardinge)

The Talk the Talk team is taking a break, but Daniel jumped at the chance to speak to Louisa Fitzhardinge, whose new comedy show ‘Comma Sutra’ looks at the lighter side of the use — and misuse — of grammar.

But linguists and self-described grammar mavens don’t always get along. Is concern for good grammar necessary, or does it lead to linguistic discrimination?

To find a rhyme for silver
Or any “rhymeless rhyme”
Requires only will, ver-
bosity and time
–Stephen Sondheim

A woman asked me to rhyme a penguin.
I said, “Does the erstwhile Emperor Eng win?
If not, I’ll send a brand-new tractor
To “Big Boy” Williams, cinemactor;
On the card attached, a smiling penguin
Will say, “You’re truly a man among men, Guinn.”
“All right,” she said, “so now rhyme silver,”
But I left because I’d had my filver.
–Ira Levin

Episode 184: We Do Language (featuring Anne Charity Hudley)

There’s more than one way to speak English.

But too often, kids who speak other varieties of English find themselves on the wrong side of their teachers. How can educators — and everyone else — avoid linguistic discrimination and value the different kinds of English all around us?

Daniel Midgley speaks with author and educator Anne Charity Hudley on this episode of Talk the Talk.
